World Champion Teaches Birmingham Kids to Swim for Free with British Gas Pools 4 Schools

Birmingham children are being taught to swim for free in an innovative portable pool that’s been built on King Edward VI playing fields in Aston, for King Edward VI Aston School Sport Partnership.

The facility, which is part of the British Gas Pools 4 Schools initiative, will get the official seal of approval from six-times swimming world champion Mark Foster, European breaststroke silver medallist Kate Haywood and Birmingham’s European junior silver medallist Rebecca Cole.

British Gas Pools 4 Schools takes a special teaching pool around the country and provides free swimming lessons for children in areas where there is limited access to a pool.

The programme is aiming to teach 6,000 school children to swim over a six month period at the Aston site. It will deliver at least 60,000 swimming lessons in total, with each child taking part in 10 teaching sessions. At least eight schools are currently using the pool and more have expressed interest.
