The British Gas Great East Swim Gets Underway in Alton Water

SATURDAY, 19 JUNE 2010: The British Gas Great East Swim, now in its second year, has attracted a bumper field of over 3,000 swimmers – double last year’s inaugural entry.

Many swimmers will be aiming to raise much needed funds for a raft of good causes – and they will take the plunge alongside some of the world’s best swimmers.

Current world champion Keri-Anne Payne is expected to make a big splash as is European champion 200 Individual Medley James Goddard– one of Britain’s best swimmers– and World champion 10k/25k Brendan Capell from Australia.

The British Gas Great Swim Series is the UK’s leading outdoor swimming event and consists of five open water swims in Suffolk, London, Strathclyde, Windermere, and a recently announced new swim in Salford. The one mile challenge equals 64 lengths of a 25m swimming pool and is a fantastic challenge for all swimming abilities. Over 10,000 swimmers took the plunge in 2009, from an 86-year-old granddad to a middle aged mother of three with a fear of deep water.
