Coventry children, whose school swimming pool was closed due to unaffordable repair costs, are being taught to swim for free in an innovative portable pool which has been built at Coundon Court School by British Gas Pools 4 Schools.

Portable Pool In St Helens Offers Hope To Young British Swimmers In The North West
Following government cuts to their free swimming programme which benefited over 42,000 people across the North West alone, a partnership including Total Swimming, British Gas, St Helens Council and local schools has demonstrated their dedication to encourage children and the community back into the water through the Pools 4 Schools initiative.
Officially opened to the public today by Olympian Mark Foster, The British Gas Pools 4 Schools’12m by 6m swimming pool will be at Broadway Leisure Centre in St Helens for the next six weeks, and will provide free swimming lessons to school children in the area.
1 in 5 children in the UK leave school without being able to swim, and this statistic rises to 4 in 5 in some communities with a limited access to a pool. The presence of the pool and free lessons will hopefully enable St Helens school children to achieve the National Curriculum target of teaching school children to swim 25m unaided.
The program has visited nine schools around the country since 2009.
REGIONAL STATISTICS:
• British Gas Pools 4 Schools will teach over 1,000 children to swim while in St Helens, helping over 30 schools in the region
• 8% of the population in the North West (446,200 people) swim for at least 30 minutes once a week (Oct 2008 – Oct 2009). Compared to just 285,000 people in 2006 – 2007
• 13% of people around the country would like to take part in swimming but don’t have the opportunity to do so
• Leisure centres in St Helens will be hosting sports sessions throughout the summer holidays. St Helens Council says the ‘Sports Stars’ events will include activities such as badminton, tennis, football, swimming, basketball, cricket, hockey and volleyball
